Markets keenly await the major address of Federal Reserve Chairman, Powell, to the Jackson Hole Symposium. Markets are expecting a lot from this extremely important speech, looking for confirmation of victory over ‘the war on inflation’, and a look forward to an easing cycle for monetary policy. There will be warnings, but expectations remain high, despite some frayed nerves. US Bond Yields pushed higher, reflecting the nerves and US equities dipped lower, following a series of recent gains. PMI data across Europe and the US reflected continued weakness, especially in Manufacturing, while commodities have been softening. The EUR dipped back to 1.1100, while the GBP’s recent resurgence halted, slipping back below 1.3100.
Commodity currencies also suffered the firmer reserve, with the AUD falling back to 0.6700, while the NZD dropped to 0.6130. Australian and Japanese flash PMI was better than expected and stronger than that of Europe and the US. The weaker commodity prices have finally begun to be reflected in the currencies. All eyes are now turned to Jackson Hole.
