A slow start to the trading week as US markets were closed for a long weekend. European markets dipped sharply, following German GDP numbers, showing a contraction of 0.3% for the last year, reflecting the dark place the ‘engine-room of Europe’ is in. The economic malaise is only degenerating in the 2024 year, with massive farmer and truck driver protests closing down major German cities. EU Industrial Production contracted 0.3%, and minus 2.6% annualised, emphasising the economic problems engulfing Europe. The EUR drifted lower, trading 1.0920, while the GBP slipped to 1.2720.
Commodity currencies continued to lack favour, with the AUD falling below 0.6650, while the NZD ventured below 0.6200. Domestic markets will follow NZ Business Confidence data, due for release this morning, while Australian Consumer Confidence numbers and inflation data will also be under analysis.
